The Breville 800ESXL

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine

A combination of good materials and excellent design makes The Breville 800ESXL a first-rate choice for espresso lovers. Its professional look isn’t just a pretty facade; it’s also an indicator of the professional-level results you can achieve.

That great design starts with a ThermoBlock heating unit that keeps the water at exactly the right temperature for the entire process. It’s not quite as good as the brass boilers one finds in commercial units in that respect, but it still delivers a more than respectable performance.

Some espresso maker reviewers are not keen on ThermoBlock heating mechanisms. That’s ok. Some music lovers still think vinyl records are the only way to produce rich sound. Keep in mind, expensive high quality units like the Gaggia 95005 use a ThermoBlock, so you can rest easy.

Of course, the proof is only found by experience, not comparison. There, espresso lovers will find themselves quite happy.

The quality parts and the operational controls on this Breville model mean it can produce as fine a cup as you can devise. Those who’ve tried it know this first hand.

The large heating tray in the base also contributes. It keeps the espresso at the right temperature at the end of the process. Experienced home baristas know that dumping hot coffee into a cold cup is less than ideal. Pre-heating the cup helps prevent rapid cool down, which would lead to a less than stellar shot. No problem with that here.

You’ll find the 800ESXL produces plenty of those shots before you have to refill. The removable water tank holds enough for 50 shots before running out. That makes this model a great choice for large parties. Long after the party, that tank is easy to move to the sink for a quick de-calcification, too.

The somewhat heavy housing means you won’t be moving this model around much, though. At 31 lbs (19 kg), it’s meant to stay put. But that also helps to keep it from tipping over during filling, operation, or clean up. With a stainless steel exterior and a chrome-plated brass porta-filter that effort will be easy to do, thankfully.

The steam wand is equally easy to use thanks to a fine design. The ball lets you swivel it in any direction, making different-sized cups easy to use. And, on those occasions when you prefer hot tea or cocoa to an espresso (surely there are such times even for coffee aficionados, no?), the wand makes for a great hot water dispenser.

If there’s any area of weakness in the 800ESXL, it would be its dual-wall design. It does help you create great coffee, but the puck produced is a bit sludgy. Those who are used to a relatively dry, compact puck will not be grateful for the clean up effort. Whether that’s important is an individual matter.

With so much going for it, we don’t mind that the Breville 800ESXL requires just a few seconds more effort. Quality espresso counts for a lot and few makers on the market can outdo this unit.

Gaggia 90951

Gaggia 90951 Platinum Vision Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island

First, the bad news: the Gaggia 90951 carries a hefty price tag. You’ll find it’s worth every penny. It’s simply a myth that entry-level machines for a $100 or less can produce the same cup in the same way as a professional-level machine. It isn’t mere snobbishness that drives fanatical espresso lovers to spend the extra money.

Simply look over the 90951 for a moment and you’ll get the first clues about why that is. This is what quality design and quality manufacturing looks like. Easy-clean stainless steel covers durable ABS plastic, the same elements used in a commercial machine.

You won’t see the stainless steel-lined boiler that produces high-temperature water rapidly, evenly, and consistently for every brew cycle, but you’ll be glad it’s there. With 1500 watts you can rest assured your brew will never come out too cool.

One of the other things you don’t immediately see is equally important: the Aqua Prima Filter. It removes impurities from your water. Since that is, obviously, one of the key ingredients to a quality espresso, you want it to be just right. It has a nice side benefit of minimizing calcium build up, making for lower maintenance and longer life. There’s even a test strip included to let you see the hardness of your water.

Some of the quality you can’t see but can feel. The stainless steel warming tray will preheat your cup, an essential task to produce the best shot. (Rapid cooling of the brew by hot coffee hitting a cold cup should always be avoided.)

The integrated commercial-quality conical burr grinder allows you to generate medium or coarse grounds to suit your taste. It then automatically puts the output where you need it. And the 250 gram bean hopper lets you produce plenty at one time. The unit allows you to adjust the output to between 7 and 10.5 grams, too, so your brew is the strength you want.

At the same time, the 90951 is designed to be ultra easy to use, even for those without years of barista-level experience. This model features a fully programmable digital menu.

Touch an option on the backlit LCD screen and produce an espresso or cappuccino exactly as you like. Select your preferred temperature, aroma, and strength. (The text can even display in any of eight languages.) The 90951 also lets you schedule that program for automatic on/off each day of the week.

For those who love their cappuccinos and lattes, the built-in Pannarello steam wand lets you froth the milk exactly as it should be. With a simple selection, you can use it to produce hot water for hot cocoa or hot tea, when you prefer.

There are convenience factors you don’t get in low-end machines, as well. The height of the cup tray is adjustable by use of an electric switch. The 50-oz water tank is not only removable — a common feature — but so is the brew unit, making for easy cleanup of this important component. The 90951 also features two spouts so you can brew two cups at once.

The Gaggia 90951 carries a top-of-the-line price, it’s true. But that’s fully justified by its top-of-the-line features and quality. Definitely a machine for those who want the best espresso possible.
