Gaggia 90951

Gaggia 90951 Platinum Vision Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island

First, the bad news: the Gaggia 90951 carries a hefty price tag. You’ll find it’s worth every penny. It’s simply a myth that entry-level machines for a $100 or less can produce the same cup in the same way as a professional-level machine. It isn’t mere snobbishness that drives fanatical espresso lovers to spend the extra money.

Simply look over the 90951 for a moment and you’ll get the first clues about why that is. This is what quality design and quality manufacturing looks like. Easy-clean stainless steel covers durable ABS plastic, the same elements used in a commercial machine.

You won’t see the stainless steel-lined boiler that produces high-temperature water rapidly, evenly, and consistently for every brew cycle, but you’ll be glad it’s there. With 1500 watts you can rest assured your brew will never come out too cool.

One of the other things you don’t immediately see is equally important: the Aqua Prima Filter. It removes impurities from your water. Since that is, obviously, one of the key ingredients to a quality espresso, you want it to be just right. It has a nice side benefit of minimizing calcium build up, making for lower maintenance and longer life. There’s even a test strip included to let you see the hardness of your water.

Some of the quality you can’t see but can feel. The stainless steel warming tray will preheat your cup, an essential task to produce the best shot. (Rapid cooling of the brew by hot coffee hitting a cold cup should always be avoided.)

The integrated commercial-quality conical burr grinder allows you to generate medium or coarse grounds to suit your taste. It then automatically puts the output where you need it. And the 250 gram bean hopper lets you produce plenty at one time. The unit allows you to adjust the output to between 7 and 10.5 grams, too, so your brew is the strength you want.

At the same time, the 90951 is designed to be ultra easy to use, even for those without years of barista-level experience. This model features a fully programmable digital menu.

Touch an option on the backlit LCD screen and produce an espresso or cappuccino exactly as you like. Select your preferred temperature, aroma, and strength. (The text can even display in any of eight languages.) The 90951 also lets you schedule that program for automatic on/off each day of the week.

For those who love their cappuccinos and lattes, the built-in Pannarello steam wand lets you froth the milk exactly as it should be. With a simple selection, you can use it to produce hot water for hot cocoa or hot tea, when you prefer.

There are convenience factors you don’t get in low-end machines, as well. The height of the cup tray is adjustable by use of an electric switch. The 50-oz water tank is not only removable — a common feature — but so is the brew unit, making for easy cleanup of this important component. The 90951 also features two spouts so you can brew two cups at once.

The Gaggia 90951 carries a top-of-the-line price, it’s true. But that’s fully justified by its top-of-the-line features and quality. Definitely a machine for those who want the best espresso possible.
